Bays Mountain Park - Barge Rides, Sawyer Style
Tom Sawyer Barge Rides during April 2010 Imagine yourself drifting lazily down the Mississippi river, breezes ruffling your hair and the sun kissing your face. Well, Kingsport can offer you an alternative; take a forty five minute ride on Bays Mountain Park’s barge and listen to the sounds of nature while a park naturalist points out beaver dams, deer or birds. On occasion, a chorus of wolf howls will serenade your ride. The barge ride is $1.50, but during April folks dressed as a character from Tom Sawyer or carrying a Tom Sawyer book can pick up a free pass for that day at the gift shop. Just remember the barge rides are first come first serve and fill up quickly, be sure to check http://www.baysmountain.com/ for program times or call 229-9447.

Those who win the contest, picture will be displayed in Town Center Mall Pirate Day (Treasure Map, Pirate TP Roll craft, and Milk Carton Pirate Ship) Week 3: Ch 7-8 Continue Reading book and have discussions Activities Fences to be delivered. Children will help paint and donate to Habitat for Humanity. Cave Day (virtual online tour of caves, create your own cave) Week 4 Complete Book and discussions Tom Sawyer Day Friday, April 23rd. Host: Tom Sawyer/Storyteller Kids dress up in overalls and hobo style Activities Watch movie Essay’s Difference of book and movie Write about the difference between how Tom was punished with today’s punishment(Whitewashing fence vs. taking away cell phone) What was life like a hundred years ago in Kingsport, TN? Create an exhibit with pictures and captions explaining the photos.

YMCA ! After School Program - Treasure maps, dark caves, pirate adventures, dead cats - Sound exciting?
Treasure maps, dark caves, pirate adventures, dead cats - Sound exciting? Tom Sawyer and his best friend Huckleberry Finn found it to be very exciting. This April, the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA After School Program’s are bringing Mark Twain's book Tom Sawyer to life in some very creative and fun ways! We will spend a week searching for buried treasure with the aid of some old treasure maps. Then, we'll be building some sea worthy rafts as we live the life of a pirate. And when we return home from the sea, we will go caving and hope that we can find our way out of the deep dark cave. And, what would a Tom Sawyer month be without whitewashing an actual fence and attending a picnic complete with old fashioned lunch pails and old fashioned games? Join us as we read and enjoy Twain's classic, Tom Sawyer and hope that we don't get in nearly as much trouble as Tom and Huck!

Bays Mountain Park - Tom’s Treasure Contest
Tom’s Treasure Contest Tom Sawyer had all kinds of treasure squirreled away, some in his pockets to the dismay of his Aunt Polly. Tom enjoyed bartering his wealth to smooth his lot in life, always glad to offer a friend the enjoyment of painting a fence or other joyful labor to keep them happy and give him time to locate more treasures. Bays Mountain Park is going to give you the chance to identify some of “Tom’s Treasures”. Stop by the Gift Shop where there will be ID forms for you to fill out; the first correct ID drawn will receive a courtesy pass and be able to schedule a private barge for you and twenty four of your close friends. Drawings will be held on Mondays in April and the winners will be posted on http://www.baysmountain.com/ on the following Tuesdays [April 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.] Winners will need to contact Fred Hilton to set up the barge ride. The private “Tom’s Treasures” barges are not limited to April and may be scheduled during the summer months.

The Circus is in Town - join the carvers for a demonstration
The Circus is in Town The arrival of the circus would have been a much anticipated event along the Mississippi. Strange and exotic animals like elephants, giraffes and horses all fancied up. If you can't have a circus a carousel would be equally welcomed. Come learn about carousels and see the progress woodcarvers are making as they create elaborate animals that will capture your imagination. Starting Wednesday April 14 10 AM at Paul Bellamy's furniture Store on Broad Street. Located in Tri-Cities TN/VA, this 6,000 sq ft venue boasts a bar built out of a real bus along with several other must-see features. The venue is used for concerts of various genres as well as private events, and is an extension of the popular BONE FIRE Smokehouse barbecue restaurant. The garage doors are up and the bus is parked, time to unveil the highly anticipated music venue in Downtown Kingsport, The Bus Pit by BONE FIRE Smokehouse. The 6000 square foot building, which was a former bus garage for the city, has been converted to a special event and music venue. While live music fills the air, servers will pour beverages from a city transit bus that has been converted into a bar. A city bus has been parked over the “pit” of the garage and will serve as pass through for patrons from BONE FIRE Smokehouse. The bus will serve as the main focal point while a permanent stage has been constructed to play host to various style bands making their way through Kingsport.

Lunch with Mark Twain April 25th on Sunday Kurt Sutton will be at the Bays Mountain Park Amphitheatre in Mark Twain persona. Mr. Twain will regale park visitors with old south witticisms continuing Kingsport’s full month of Tom foolery in April. Mr. Twain’s reverie will begin at 12 noon. Be sure and pack your lunch so you can sit back and enjoy old southern philosophy. After all how many opportunities do you have to have lunch with a famous author?

Kingsport Theatre Guild and Kingsport Ballet partner with Arts Council's ART CRAWL
While crawling gallery to gallery in historic downtown Kingsport, through magnificent art and sampling fine local tastes, you will see Tom and Becky from Kingsport Theatre Guild enjoying themselves as the Month of Tomfoolery winds down. Wander up to the Ballet studio and appreciate the contemporary dance created for Kingsport's Big Read event by the Kingsport Ballet. Arts Crawl On April 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., visitors to the downtown Kingsport business district will be able to take a trip through the arts by picking up an Arts Crawl Passport under the State Theater Marquee, 157 Broad Street. The passport will include a list of, and directions to, the participating galleries and other venues.: BANQ, Cindy Saadeh Fine Art Studio, Ripper Arts Studio & Gallery, Downtown Kingsport Association Gallery, Kingsport Ballet, River Mountains Antiques, Style, Suzanne Barrett Justis Fine Art Studio and Gallery, The Gallery of Local Artists, and Up Against the Wall Gallery. In conjunction with this spring’s Arts Crawl the Arts Council will be announcing the Arts Award recipients at BANQ at 8:30 p.m. Nominations will be accepted until March 22. Nomination forms are available online at www.kingsportARTS.org. Tickets for the Arts Crawl are $30.00 per person in advance and $35.00 purchased the day of the event. Kingsport Ballet Presents "Tom Sawyer - A Contemporary Dance"
Kingsport Ballet presents Tom Sawyer – A contemporary dance. Kingsport Ballet has created a new contemporary dance, inspired by the story of Tom Sawyer. The music is upbeat and playful, and the characters fully embrace the saucy nature of Tom and his friends. The piece illustrates a scene where the show-off boys encounter a group of proper girls and proceed to make themselves known to them. Tom Sawyer is set in the antebellum era in Mississippi, and the dance aims to embody this period of time while exploring contemporary ballet: old fashioned charm meets present day movement. Greater Kingsport Republican Women
The Greater Kingsport Republican Women provided funding for over 1000 books to made available for Kingsport's Big Read. Copies of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" are given out through affiliates of the Big Read. Additional copies will be made available at the Proclamation and Kick-Off. Join the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Kingsport and other partners in Kingsport's Big Read as we kick-off the month with the Mayor's Proclamation of a Month of Tomfoolery at 11:45 AM.
